THE ACADEMIC COURSES
OFFERED:
At present three M.Sc. (2 years), two Post
Masters Diploma (1 year) and one PG Diploma
course (1 year) courses are offered by FRI
University.
FOREIGN NATIONALS:
Reservation to the extent of 15% of the
prescribed seats on supernumerary basis for
Foreign Nationals shall be made for admission to
each of the M.Sc. course available in the
Institute provided they have passed the B.Sc. or
equivalent qualifying examination from a
University outside India and also fulfill the
conditions: (a) that they must have minimum
eligibility requirements; (b) that the
applications of scholarship holding Foreign
Nationals (Under various schemes) are routed
through Indian Council for Cultural
Relations/Ministry of Human Resource and
Development (Deptt. of Education), Govt. of
India, New Delhi. For further details please go

M.Sc. Forestry:
This course is conducted through conventional
lectures and practicals as well as through
excursions and interactions. Emphasis is laid on
silviculture, forest ecology and environmental
conservation, forest mensuration, diseases and
pest, statistics and research methods, forest
resource utilisation (wood and non-wood forest
products), forest resources survey including
aerial photo interpretation and satellite data
interpretation and computer applications.
Specialisation is imparted in the field of
forest management and forest economics. The
academic requirement for this course is B.Sc.
with at least one of the subjects from Botany,
Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics and
Zoology or B.Sc. in Agriculture or Forestry.
M.Sc. Wood Science and
Technology: This course covers
theoretical and practical aspects of wood
utilisation for industries and wood science and
technology, such as anatomical structure, wood
physics, wood chemistry, timber mechanics,
adhesives, saw milling, seasoning, preservation
working and finishing, plywood, particle and
fibre-board, reconstituted structural timber,
energy usage, processing and use of plantation
grown wood, wood biodegradation, statistics and
computer applications. The course includes a
4-months dissertation on any problem of
industrial nature. The academic requirement for
this course is B.Sc. with Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics or B.Sc. in Forestry.
M.Sc. Environment
Management:
This course will equip the students with the
skills to understand and utilize practical
aspects of economic and ecological disciplines
as it applies to environmental management. The
course develops ability to analyze environmental
policy and economic mechanisms within
ecologically sustainable development framework.
The course contains foundation course in ecology
and environmental science, ecosystem analysis
and impact assessment, environmental physics and
biogeochemistry, conservation and restoration
ecology, environmental
pollution and health management environmental
microbiology and biotechnology, impact
assessment and environmental law, environmental
economics and sociology, water pollution
monitoring and management, air pollution
monitoring and management, biodiversity
monitoring and management, environmental hazards
and risk management and project on the topic
contemporary in nature. The academic requirement
for this course is B.Sc. Degree with at least
one of the following subjects - Botany, Zoology,
Environment Or Bachelor's degree in Forestry Or
Agriculture Or BE in Environment Science.
Post Masters Diploma in
Natural Resource Management:
With the beginning of the 21st century the era
of specialization has set in, particularly while
managing the delicate balance of nature and
utilization of natural resources. In this course
the emphasizes will be on sustainable
utilization of renewable natural resources viz.
plants and plants products. The course would be
covered in two semesters spread over a year and
will contain different aspects of natural
resource utilization and cultivation. The
academic requirement of this course is M.Sc. in
any discipline. The candidate should preferably
have any of the Life Sciences subjects at
graduation level.
Post Masters Diploma in
Non Wood Forest Products:
This course is a specifically oriented towards
developing trained managers for cultivation of
Non Wood Forest Products viz. Bamboo, Cane,
Medicinal Plants and other economically
important Non Wood Forest Products. It is
envisaged that the student passing out from this
course will fulfill the requirement of this
newly emerging sector, which has a very high
potential of generating employment at various
levels. The academic requirement for this course
is M.Sc. in Botany, Zoology, Forestry or
Chemistry.
P G Diploma in Pulp and
Paper Technology: This course is
proposed for junior level paper technologists
and the intake will be from the sponsored
candidates from the paper mills having minimum
two years experience or fresh students who have
passed graduation with chemistry as one of the
subject. The applicants must have minimum 50%
marks in aggregate as well as in chemistry. The
course will be of one year duration. The course
will be focused towards training technical
manpower for paper industry. The academic
requirement for this course is three years
Bachelor’s degree with Chemistry as one of the
subjects.
PLACEMENTS
FRI University provides assistance in placement
of deserving students. Various industries/
organizations visit the campus for campus
interviews. On an average 50% of the students
get placements through the campus interviews.
However, in case of M.Sc. Wood Science and
Technology the placement is 100% in general.
SCHOLARSHIP
FRI University provides merit scholarship to the
topper students in each course. The scholarship
may be upto Rs.7,500/- per semester and is
awarded separately for each semester depending
on the result of the previous semester. For the
purpose of award of scholarship in the first
semester the result of the entrance test is
considered and the topper in general category
and SC/ST category are awarded the scholarship
in each course subject to relevant rules.
DOCTORAL PROGRAM:
A student can pursue research and studies
leading to an award of Ph.D. degree at FRI
University or any of ICFRE research centres
established all over the country. The research
facilities in the field of forestry and allied
subjects at the FRI University are amongst the
best in the country. At present over 443
research scholars are registered for Ph.D. at
the FRI University. Till now 303 Ph.D. degrees
have been awarded. The eligibility criteria for
registration as Ph.D. student are that a
candidate must:

hold a
master's degree or its equivalent from any
recognized university or Institute.

have received
55% or above in Post graduate examination.
-
have the
supervisor/guide from FRI or its research
centres and Co-guide may be from outside.
-
the
application for registration as Ph.D.
scholar for the under noted two terms
is accepted in the office of the F.R.I.
University or its Research Centres as per
details given below:
1. March term –from 16th January up
to 14th February with a application fee of
Rs. 500/- and with a
late fee of Rs. 1000/- up to 28th February (Rs.500/-
application fee and Rs.500/- late fee)
2. September term –from 17th July to
16th August with a application fee of Rs.
500/- and with a late
fee of Rs. 1000/- up to 31st August.
Application forms
for Doctoral Programme can be downloaded from
the website www.icfre.org . The fee will be
accepted by Demand Draft in favour of Registrar,
F.R.I., University.
