Directorate of Research : The Research Planning Division of the Directorate deals with the planning, processing and formulation of new research project including the review of the ongoing research project in commensuration with rolling research plans of all the institutes of ICFRE. Every year the Research Planning Division conducts the Research Advisory Group meetings at Institute level and Research Policy Committee meeting at National level to discuss and decide the rolling research plan for the next five years.
The Directorate of Research through its Forests and Climate Change Division is coordinating research pertaining to global warming and role of forestry sector in India. As ICFRE has been granted the status of an observer organization in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Directorate is formulating policy on climate issues leading to international negotiations under the Convention. The Forests and Climate Change Division is also providing advisory and consultancy services for conceptualizing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD-Plus) projects in the country.

The Directorate of Research ensures that all the research projects taken up by ICFRE Institutes are need based and address the regional and national forestry research problems.
The research prioritization by the Directorate is through participatory mechanism involving all the stakeholders and end users.

For holistic approach to address the research problems and to avoid duplication of work, the ICFRE has initiated all India coordinated research projects on some emerging themes including important forestry species. The Directorate is also going to conduct Quinquennial Review of four ICFRE Institutes and one research centre on pilot basis for the research projects taken up during the 10th five year plan.
This Directorate is conducting review of some research through independent subject matter experts to assess the achievement of objectives and technology transferred etc.
