Bio–diversity Conservation In India
Conservation of national biodiversity has become
a priority with negotiations at the
international and national forum - the need for
conservation. The legally binding Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD), that entered into
force on 29th December 1993, recognizes
sovereign rights of States (nations) over their
natural biological resources and links them to
sustainable use, fair and equitable sharing of
benefits arising from the use of these genetic
resources.

One of the mandates of the Division is to
address national biodiversity issues and
consolidate biodiversity information for unique
ecosystems within the country. The information
so generated will be used to classify species
for conservation priority that can be
incorporated in the national conservation
strategies and action plans being developed by
the States within India. The Council’s mandate
is on research, education and extension of
different activities of Convention of Biological
Diversity (CBD) including cross cutting themes
on forest biodiversity. Similarly a Biodiversity
and Climate Change Cell is opened in the 8
research Institutes of ICFRE in different
bio-geographical regions of the country.
Climate Change
Biodiversity and climate change
division was created in December
2002. BCC division in the Indian
Council of Forestry Research and
Education has been proactive on

capacity building programmes on
Climate Change, CDM and forestry for
various level of forest officers,

currently engaged in Forestry and
Climate Change related policy issues
leading to international
negotiations under United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC). Division is also
contributing towards preparation of
India’s Second National
Communication (SNC) to UNFCCC.
