Bio–diversity Conservation In India
Conservation of national biodiversity has become a priority with negotiations at the international and national forum - the need for conservation. The legally binding Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), that entered into force on 29th December 1993, recognizes sovereign rights of States (nations) over their natural biological resources and links them to sustainable use, fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of these genetic resources.

One of the mandates of the Division is to address national biodiversity issues and consolidate biodiversity information for unique ecosystems within the country. The information so generated will be used to classify species for conservation priority that can be incorporated in the national conservation strategies and action plans being developed by the States within India. The Council’s mandate is on research, education and extension of different activities of Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) including cross cutting themes on forest biodiversity. Similarly a Biodiversity and Climate Change Cell is opened in the 8 research Institutes of ICFRE in different bio-geographical regions of the country.
