The Forest
Research Centre (FRC), Hyderabad, of Indian
Council of Forestry Research & Education started
functioning under the administrative control of
Institute of Wood Science and Technology
Bangalore, since July,1997. The centre was
initially known as “ Advanced Centre for
Biotechnology and Mangrove Forests”.

This, however has been changed to
“Forest Research Centre, Hyderabad “.
The office cum laboratory building
construction work started in March 1998
and the same was handed over to the
centre on 1st March, 2000 .The building
complex was formally inaugurated by the
Hon’ble Minister of Environment and
Forests, Govt. of India, Sri.T.R.Balu on
15th November 2000. The research work
started from 2000-2001 onwards to meet
the research needs of the southern dry
deciduous ecosystem of the states of
Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa on
various aspects in the field of forestry
Research.
The Centre is established in a sprawling
100 Acre campus on the outskirts of
Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, The
centre is situated about 22 KM from the
Secunderabad Railway Station at
Dulapally village on a link road between
Kompally (on NH 7) and Bahadurpally
Village (on Hyderabad-Narsapur Road).
MANDATE
a) To carry out tree improvement studies
for improving socially relevant
multipurpose forestry species.
b) Identification of seed production
areas and establishment of seed
orchards.
c) Biotechnology and mass propagation of
quality planting stock.
d) Establishment of model nursery,
clonal and seedling seed orchards,
germplasm bank, provenance trials
selected MPT species for improving the
forest productivity.
e) Research and demonstration of
agroforestry models.
f) Biodiversity of eastern Ghats, impact
assessment of eco-disturbance and
rehabilitation.
g) Ecological and vegetation studies of
mangrove forests.
h) Studies on non-wood forests products,
ethno-botanical studies and
establishment of medicinal plant garden
and museum.
i) Research on chemistry of forest
products, evaluation and standardization
techniques
j) Research relating to protection of
natural forest specially relating to
forest fire, diseases and pests
k) Research relating to climate change
l) Research relating to soil sciences
m) To carry out the monitoring and
evaluation of the projects and impact
assessment studies.
