Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding Coimbatore

The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) is a national Institute established in April 1988 under the Indian Council of Forestry Research (ICFR). A multi-faceted research Institute primarily aimed to carry out research to improve productivity of forest tree species through conventional breeding programmes and biotechnological interventions. Mainstream research carried out by the Genetics and Biotechnology divisions is supported by Silviculture, Seed technology, Protection (Entomology & Pathology), Agro-forestry and Bio-diversity divisions.

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the official webpage of Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB). The Institute conducts national level research on the subjects of Genetics and Tree Breeding of important forest species. In addition, it also attends to the local problems of the States of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry.

I hope, the information given in the webpage will be of great help to the viewers. Suggestions for improving the website are welcome.

Required facilities have been established to pursue the mandate and the Institute is presently running research projects for Ministries of Environment and Forests, Science and Technology (DST, DBT), Health and Family Welfare (NMPB) in GoI, National Mission on Bamboo Applications, NABARD and Central Statistical Organization. Some public sector undertakings of Govt. of Tamil Nadu and international agencies like SIDA and International Foundation for Science, Sweden are also funding some research projects. Large number of research projects are undertaken as a part of National Forestry Research Plan with financial assistance from ICFR.

The Institute has also implemented many research programmes supported by World Bank, UNDP, FAO, FORTIP, DFID.

The Institute is involved in active research in the following areas:

  • Clonal propagation
  • Bamboo species Trials
  • Agroforestry systems
  • Productivity and nutrient cycling
  • Integrated disease and pest management
  • Seed Handling and Seed Testing
  • Ecorestoration
  • Conservation

Mandate

To identify and evolve varieties of species used in afforestation and social forestry that will contribute to the national goal of achieving a growth of 3 to 4 cubic meters of biomass per hectare per year within the ecological considerations applicable to the area.
