Rain Forest
Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, Assam, is one
of the constituent institutes of Indian Council
of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE),
Dehradun.
The Institute came into being in 1988 to cater
the forestry related research & extension needs
of the North Eastern Region of the country. The
Institute encompasses of all the disciplines of
forestry research. Recently an Advanced Research
Centre for Bamboo and Rattan (ARCBAR) has also
been established at Aizwal in Mizoram under this
institute.

The vision of the institute is to develop itself
as a “Center of Excellence for Bamboo”.

Forest
Research
Institute
(RFRI),
Jorhat,
a
constituent
institute
of
Indian
Council
of
Forestry
Research
and
Education
(ICFRE),
Dehradun.
This
is
one
of
the
most
diverse
regions
of
India,
may
it
be
ecological,
socio-economic,
cultural,
topographic,
climatic
or
ethnic
point
of
view.

It
has
its
own
distinctive
structural
and
species
composition,
considered
as
the
bowl
of
biodiversity
and
is
one
of
the
mega
biodiversity
hotspot
regions
of
the
world.
Thus
the
institute
is
uniquely
poised
for
forestry
and
forestry
related
activities.
We
at
RFRI,
Jorhat
are
striving
hard
to
take
the
advantage
of
the
tremendous
opportunities
that
are
available
in
this
region,
in
forestry
research
and
technology
development
fields,
which
will
greatly
help
in
poverty
alleviation
of
the
region.
The
institute
has
a
good
strength
of
manpower
for
the
extension
of
technology
and
training
and
we
are
taking
advantage
of
it.
We
also
have
a
vision
to
develop
the
institute
as
“Centre
of
Excellence
for
Bamboo”
within
the
11th
Five
Year
Plan;
an
Advanced
Research
Centre
for
Bamboo
and
Rattans
(ARCBAR)
has
already
been
established
in
Aizwal,
